Keywords can be added to a project via CSV import. To do so, they keywords must first be saved in a CSV file.
Pro Tip: If you want to add lots of keywords to an existing project or replace an existing set with completely new keywords, it can make sense to create this as an event. For example, the SEO visibility can change abruptly. Such jumps can then still be associated with the addition of new keywords after a certain time, as you can display events in graphs. Read the Project Management article under Events to find out how this works.
- Select the keyword tab in the Keyword-Tab in Project Setups and download the sample file.
- Open a program such as Microsoft Excel, Open Office, etc.
- Create a blank workbook via "File" > "New" > "Blank workbook"
- Click on the "Data" tab, select "From text" and then select the downloaded CSV file.
- In the text conversion assistant, under "File origin", select option "65001: Unicode (UTF-8)" and click "Next".
- Under “Separator”, now select the same "separator" that separates the keywords from the tags, so that all keywords in the first column and all the tags in the second column are displayed in the display field of the text conversion assistant.
- Click on "Finish" and confirm insertion into the worksheet by clicking "OK".
- Add your own keywords (in column A) and tags (separated by double pipes "||" in column B) to the sample file. Make sure row 1 with the cells "Keyword" and "Tags" remains unchanged.
- Save the file as a "CSV (separated by a delimiter)" file.
- Click on "Import CSV file" in the Keyword Manager and select the saved CSV file to add the Keywords (+ Tags) to your project.
Troubleshooting: Encoding
If the CSV file is not encoded correctly, special characters may come through as "???". To keep this from happening, make sure you've followed the steps outlined above. As an alternative, users may use Open Office or Google Docs to save their file as a .CSV. Often, this will circumvent encoding issues that occur with Microsoft office. Additionally, uploading keywords and tags through the UI will work as well since Searchmetrics is able to accept all characters.
